Sticky, juicy and, above all, chocolaty: That’s the Swedish Kladdkaka. This can be roughly translated as “greasy cake”. Similar in moistness to a brownie, this chocolate cake is a real happiness maker and super easy to prepare.

Baking Kladdkaka

The Swedes love sweets, especially during their fika, the traditional daily coffee break. Kladdkaka is a classic among Swedish pastries. “Kladdkaka means “greasy” or “sticky” cake. It may sound strange at first, but it is very tasty: the cake is particularly moist and chocolaty. If you’ve had enough of American brownies, you should definitely try this traditional Swedish recipe!

Unlike the brownie, the Swedish chocolate cake contains no baking powder and is not cut into square pieces, but served as a slice of cake.

And the best thing about it: it’s super easy to bake. Even if you’re not a professional baker, you can try this recipe without the help of a baking mix. And if you’re travelling in Sweden, you should definitely try a slice of this iconic cake in one of the cafés and bakeries.

Want to bake your Kladdkaka vegan? No problem, because margarine or cooking oil will also work instead of butter. You can also replace the melted chocolate with a larger amount of cocoa powder.

Buy Kladdkaka

You can also buy the typical Swedish Kladdkaka when you visit the Swedish furniture store IKEA, for example. You might find it in other supermarkets as well. The frozen cake simply needs to be defrosted – perfect if you need to make it quickly. The store-bought cake can be pimped up in no time with a few fresh ingredients, such as cream or berries.

Unfortunately, a Kladdkaka baking mix is not available to buy, but that doesn’t matter as the cake is very easy to bake.
