Scandinavian babies clothing: cheerful and functional

The fashionable “Scandi style” is not only popular with adults, but also with the very little ones: Denmark, Sweden and Norway are often associated with a stylish and minimalist look. Scandinavian baby fashion achieves just that without appearing boring.

Scandinavian brands for baby fashion

Typical Scandinavian baby fashion comes mainly from Denmark, as this is where most baby clothing brands come from. The Netherlands is also home to many baby fashion manufacturers that produce Scandinavian-style clothing.

Bisgaard

The brand from Aarhus in Denmark produces shoes for young and old. Babies and toddlers will also find their first pair of shoes here, some of which are specially designed for learning to walk. The models are made from high-quality leather in natural and subtle colours. Bisgaard also produces some models from natural and sustainable materials and emphasises environmentally friendly leather processing.

Joha

Founded in Denmark in 1963, the brand was the first to produce pure woollen underwear for children and is now represented with its baby clothing in all Scandinavian countries as well as in Germany. The items are made almost exclusively from (merino) wool, some of which is blended with silk.

H&M

The Swedish H&M Group also sells Scandinavian-style baby fashion at a low price. You can find many basics and sets here.

Lego Wear

Lego is one of the best-known toy manufacturers and comes from Denmark. The brand now also has its own clothing line for children and babies under the name Lego Wear. In contrast to the classic Scandinavian style, the items are somewhat more colourful and gaudy and are reminiscent of the Lego building blocks, but are very functional.

MarMar Copenhagen

The Danish brand MarMar sells high-quality baby and children’s clothing with its finger on the pulse. The designs are a little more unusual, but therefore all the more special. Anyone who wants to dress their baby for special occasions will find what they are looking for here.

Name it

The Danish brand for children’s and baby clothing is represented at many online retailers. The label is also committed to sustainability and produces many of its items from certified organic cotton. There is a large selection for babies, from bodysuits and rompers to numerous accessories, jeans and dungarees.

Pippi Babywear

Despite the Swedish name model Pippi Longstocking, the brand for pastel-coloured and patterned baby fashion comes from Denmark. In addition to clothing, there are also many accessories, especially scarves in different colours and patterns.

Wheat

The young brand Wheat from Denmark is also characterised by the use of ecological and sustainable natural materials. The cotton is GOTS-certified and almost all the other materials fulfil Oeko-Tex standards. The founders are parents of three and named the label after the Danish wheat fields.

Nordic by nature: characteristics of Scandinavian baby fashion

The most popular items from the far north for boys and girls are cardigans, bodysuits, rompers, tights or leggings and overalls. These are particularly functional, as great importance is attached to good materials and comfortable cuts without too many frills. At the same time, of course, the cheerful and child-friendly style is not neglected.

Colours

Scandinavian baby fashion characteristics

Similar to adult fashion in the Scandi style, baby fashion is also kept a little simpler, but that doesn’t mean it’s dull. Instead of bright neon colours or wild patterns, subtle but cheerful colours such as blue, white, red and soft old pink are used.

There are many plain-coloured basics, but also pieces in subtle patterns such as stripes, dots, floral patterns or pastel animal prints. They are therefore quite neutral and can accompany the baby everywhere.

Material

Scandinavian fashion is known for its high-quality choice of materials: (Merino) wool and felt, cotton and denim as well as linen are also used for baby clothes. These natural fibres are not only durable, but also have other practical properties that set them apart from synthetic fibres and make them particularly suitable for small children. This means that nothing stands in the way of playing in the fresh air or cosy cuddles.

Wool, Cotton, Linen: characteristics

At the same time, many Scandinavian brands are focussing on sustainability with their baby clothing. When searching in some online shops, you will find direct references that mark the product as sustainable. This applies in particular to clothing made from cotton.

Accessories

baby fashion accessories

Whether boys or girls, in Scandinavian countries even the youngest children like to be kitted out with accessories. Hats and scarves are particularly popular for babies and toddlers, not least because of the cold winters in the far north. These are often decorated with little bobbles or teddy ears and are also made from high-quality, fluffy materials.

Wellies are also available for the little ones, so that they are well equipped for a walk through the rain – whether they are still in a pushchair or already on their own two feet.

Size guide

It is always helpful to know the correct size before ordering online. To determine this, it helps if you carefully measure your baby from head to toe. An approximate age can also serve as an additional guide.
